Did Atlanta’s Snow-Mageddon Leave You with a Pain in the Neck?

On a sunny day, the statistics for auto accidents in Atlanta aren’t very good. Add some ice and snow to the mix, and the rate of auto accidents increases exponentially. Whiplash is one of the most common car accident injuries we see, with symptoms that range from neck pain to headaches and migraines. The injury occurs when the head is suddenly thrust from a traumatic force and typically results in damage to the ligaments, muscles, and other tissues in the neck area. The misleading part with this particular injury is the amount of time it often takes to manifest. You may feel absolutely fine following a car accident even if neck damage has been done.  A car accident occurring at as little as 5 mph can cause trauma and injury to the soft tissues of the spine and lead to symptoms and dysfunction.  Symptoms can take weeks to arise, by which time further damage may have complicated the initial injury and led to more severe neck pain, upper back pain and potentially permanent damage to the area. The inclusion of chiropractic care for the athletes participating in the Sochi Winter Olympics reflects the fact that over the last decade chiropractors have become a key part of an athlete’s training and recovery program.  Athletes train hard and endure significant physical demands that sometimes result  in injuries that could be avoided.
